scholarship program authors Michael Viator and Steven Goodman

Houston, TX — February 22, 2024 — The University of Houston C. T. Bauer College of Business is set to benefit from the generosity of two esteemed alumni, Steven R. Goodman (’83, M.S.Accy. ’85) and Michael D. Viator (’83), who have jointly established the Goodman and Viator Scholarship Program. Both are accounting graduates of the Bauer College of Business and former presidents of the Houston CPA Society. Goodman and Viator have pledged $200,000 to support the initiative.

“We are excited to give back to our alma mater and contribute to the education of future business leaders,” said Goodman, founder of Houston-based wealth management firm Goodman Financial Corporation. “These scholarships aim to alleviate financial burdens and empower students to pursue their academic and professional goals. Additionally, supporting financial literacy initiatives should provide enduring benefits to UH students, incoming freshmen and their families, and the broader community.”

The Goodman and Viator Scholarship Program is slated for two years and aims to provide financial support to deserving students, offering 40 scholarships annually, each valued at $2,000. In addition to the scholarships, the program will support the attendance of Personal Financial Planning students at industry conferences and other financial literacy initiatives of the college.

The scholarships will be distributed among undergraduate students majoring in finance or accounting at the C. T. Bauer College of Business based on certain criteria including financial need and cumulative GPA. Recipients of the scholarships will be determined by the C. T. Bauer College of Business Scholarship Selection Committee.

“We believe that education is the key to success, and by establishing this scholarship program, we hope to make a positive impact on the lives of students pursuing careers in finance and accounting,” said Viator, a serial entrepreneur.
